Onrust. Veel mensen hebben er last van. Een wereld in beweging, en ook een land waar vanalles gebeurt. Hoeveel slechter gaat het eigenlijk dan vroeger, dan 10 jaar geleden? Of langer geleden?
In het Brabants dagblad stond op 28 november 2015 een lezenswaardig artikel waarin Gabriël van den Brink zijn zegje doet, naar aanleiding van zijn afscheid als hoogleraar Maatschappelijke Bestuurskunde aan de universiteit van Tilburg. Hij stelt onder andere dat ons beeld van de wereld vooral wordt bepaald door de dagelijkse gesprekken die we over de toestand van de wereld voeren. Wat we zeggen en horen. Hoopelijk lees je het met belangstelling en helpt het je anders naar de wereld te kijken.
Deze autobiografie van Sogyal Rinpoche in 5 hoofdstukken, is met een grote omweg bij mij terecht gekomen. Deze Tibetaanse, Boeddhistische leraar is de schrijver van het wereldberoemde boek 'Het Tibetaanse Boek Van Leven En Sterven'.
De Duitse jurist en psycholoog Marco von Münchhausen gebruikt deze autobiografie in zijn seminars. Ik kwam in contact met een vrouw die hem goed kent en zij heeft deze tekst vertaald naar mij toegemaild in de veronderstelling dat die mij en degenen die in mijn werk geïnteresseerd zijn, wel zou aanspreken. Hoe beeldend en eenvoudig Sogyal Rinpoche de gang die hij heeft gemaakt en die zoveel mensen maken in vijf 'hoofdstukken' heeft samengevat!
Op dinsdag 1 september 2015 was er op tv een uitzending over Stanislav Petrov. Hij was een hoge Soviet-militair die dankzij een nogal koelbloedig optreden in 1983 een atoomconflict tussen Amerika en Rusland wist te voorkomen.
De uitzending was getiteld: The Man Who Saved The World. Petrov is een boeiende en complexe persoonlijkheid. In zijn pleidooi voor wereldvrede maakte hij een indrukwekkend statement: Een vijand vernietig je het best door vriend van hem te worden. La Bastille in Vught was een van de eerste Nederlandse discotheken. Club Exclusif La Bastille, zoals we ‘m plechtig noemde. Maar het werd al gauw ‘Bas’ onder vrienden. En ras-Vughtenaren mochten graag spreken van La Bastielieje. Wie de tijd van La Bastille heeft meegemaakt denkt er ongetwijfeld met ongelooflijk veel plezier aan terug. Elke zondagavond volle bak. Nou ja, elke, er waren zondagavonden dat het niet erg wilde. Normaal konden er zo’n vijfhonderd man in de zaal die je via het gangetje naast fietsenmaker Van der Bruggen aan de Helvoirtseweg kon bereiken.
Een eigenaardig onderkomen, dat was het. Normaal functioneerde de zaal als het honk van een van de locale handboogschutterijen. Ton van Geene, de bedenker, oprichter en immer ronkende motor van La Bastille toog er al vroeg op zondagmiddag naartoe. Onder het plafond liep een goot aantal stalen kabels waaraan doeken waren bevestigd. Was de handboogschutterij thuis, dan waren de doeken terzijde geschoven en hingen ze wat mottig tegen de Franse-Revolutieachtig beschilderde wanden. De schildering die me het meeste is bijgebleven is de gruwelijke scène van een omlaag gevallen guillotine, waaronder een amechtig hoofd lag. En tussen al dit gruwelijks en vermakelijks schoten de handboogschutters jarenlang doodgemoedereerd hun pijlen in en meestal naast de roos. Raar, dat was het. Maar als Ton zondagmiddag aantrad werd de hele schutterij in een handomdraai omgetoverd tot een karig verlicht hol, waar altijd een beetje muffe lucht hing van doek, zweet en bier. De kolossale geluidsboxen waren boven het zwarte plafond bevestigd en konden oorverdovend veel herrie produceren. De zaal had een podium waaraan het hok grensde, waar de platen werden gedraaid. Twee zitplaatsen, twee draaitafels, twee microfoons, een flinke versterker wat schuifpanelen en bakken vol platen. Wat had een beetje discotheek eigenlijk meer nodig?
Ik had het genoegen om jarenlang als vaste diskjockey in La Bastille te mogen werken. Vanaf het prille begin was ik erbij, in 1963 ging ‘Bas’ van start. De kunst van het draaien was in die tijd een andere dan nu. We zijn dan ook een dikke vijftig jaar verder, verbeeld je dat er niets zou zijn veranderd... Een diskjockey moest op de eerste plaats heel goed weten wat de beste muziek was om op te dansen, rijdansen was het toen, tegenwoordig noemen ze dat line-dancing, nee, weinig nieuws onder de zon dus. Muziek draaien was één, maar de platen een beetje leuk aan elkaar praten was twee. En dan ook nog zo dat het gepraat de boel niet teveel ophield, er moest immers gedanst worden. Het grote voorbeeld voor diskjockeys was Joost den Draayer van Veronica, normaal Willem van Kooten geheten. Hij is de uitvinder van het vaderlandse diskjockeyen, mag je wel zeggen. We hebben hem zelf een keer als gastdraaier in La Bastille gehad. Hij had zijn toenmalige vriendin of vrouw bij zich die rustig en onaangedaan naast hem in het hok zat. Hij met een grote sigaar in de mond, die er zelfs onder het gepraat nauwelijks uitkwam. Het was een grappige man, achteloos plaatjes draaiend, een beetje voor zich uit kletsend, om jaloers van te worden. Overigens hebben we ook Jan van Veen, toen eveneens diskjockey bij Veronica en later de zwijmelstem van het programma Candlelight, een keer achter de draaitafel gehad. Een aardige man, die zijn vak verstond, maar geen belhamel als Van Kooten.
De muziek van La Bastille was een hoofdstuk apart. Discotheken vinden hun oorsprong niet in de Verenigde Staten, zoals velen denken maar in Frankrijk. Discothèques dus. Via Frankrijk schoof het fenomeen door naar België en via de Belgisch kust, waar in die tijd massa’s jonge Nederlanders in de zomer de bloemen buiten zetten, druppelden de discotheken ons land binnen. Naar ik meen had Tilburg de eerste van Nederland en was La Bastille de tweede. Ton van Geene had een vooruitziende blik en een feilloos gevoel voor dit soort zaken. Hij was niet bepaald muzikaal, had niet zo ontzettend veel met popmuziek, maar hij was creatief, een beetje weird en uiterst gedreven.
Wij zaten in de vroege jaren zestig samen op het avondlyceum, waar hij tussen de lessen door zijn ideeën en plannen aan mij ontvouwden. Daar ook vroeg hij mij of ik diskjockey bij hem wilde worden. Ik vond het spannend, was dol op popmuziek en kreeg er bovendien voor betaald. Niet veel, maar uiteindelijk heb ik er een Lelijke Eend voor kunnen kopen, weliswaar een slechte tweedehandse maar toch... Alleen, mijn liefde voor muziek was toch van een heel andere orde dan de wat zakelijker liefde van Ton. La Bastille was Frans, dus moest er Franse muziek gedraaid worden. Michael Polnareff, Adamo, Richard Anthony, Joe Dassin, Enrico Macias, enfin, bakken vol Franse muziek stonden er in het platenhok. Ik had wat meer met de Engelse scene, Engeland werd op dat moment steeds meer het centrum van de wereld op het gebied van popmuziek, mode en cultuur, daar gebeurde het, en niet in Frankrijk vond ik. Dus draaide ik graag Engelstalige muziek, nam zelfs af en toe een plaatje mee van huis en draaide dat dan zonder dat ik Ton daarover had ingelicht. Dat viel altijd in verkeerde aarde. Waar hij ook in de zaal was, als de muziek even niet naar zijn zin was, stoof hij mijn hok binnen, griste de microfoon uit mijn handen, siste me toe dat dit nergens over ging en nam de boel van me over. Ach ja, je bent jong en hij was mijn broodheer, ik heb het me lang laten welgevallen. Totdat ik naar Amsterdam vertrok en elk weekend zuidwaarts toog om in La Bastille te draaien. Toen werd zijn voortdurende ingrijpen wat minder vanzelfsprekend. En op een boos moment heb ik schriftelijk mijn congé genomen. Ton was een aardig mens, gedreven, fanatiek en met een goed hart. We spraken de kwestie uit, ik kreeg wat meer ruimte en daarmee was de kous af. We waren vrienden, dat bleek maar weer eens.
Voor zover ik me herinner heeft La Bastille tot 1968 bestaan. Ton had ambities en richtte in Den Bosch Bric-à-Brac op in het Eurohotel. En enige tijd later Ticky Trois in Eindhoven. Ton scheurde in zijn auto het hele weekend van de ene tent naar de andere, regelend, organiserend, ingrijpend, sturend, zorgend. Hij maakte zich vaak zorgen, het was ook een wankel bestaan, zo afhankelijk als hij was van de goede mood van het publiek. Elke zondagavond weer die spanning: loopt het vol of niet? Voor mij was het een leuke bijverdienste, Ton moest ervan leven.
Waarom schrijf ik dit allemaal? Dit verhaal is de reden en de verantwoording van de klus waar ik zo lang aan heb gewerkt. Zo’n 700 nummers van La Bastille door mij met liefde op Spotify bij elkaar geschraapt. Bijna alle muziek zat nog in mijn hoofd, bovendien had ik het genoegen om ooit de halve platenverzameling van La Bastille op grote banden op te mogen nemen. Gelukkig heb ik er toen gedetailleerd bijgeschreven hoe elk nummer heette, wie de uitvoerder/ster was en uit welk jaar het nummer stamde. Toen een ongelooflijk klerenwerk, nu kwam het me wel erg goed van pas. Opgeteld is het zeker vijfendertig uur muziek, zeg maar een dikke vier dagen.
Op een haar na is alles wat er op de playlist ‘La Bastille Vught’ staat in La Bastille gedraaid. En ik zeg niet dat dit alle muziek was die in de bakken van La Bastille stond, nee integendeel, nog niet de helft, denk ik. Je hoort nummers waarbij je ongetwijfeld je wenkbrauwen fronst. Kisses Sweeter Than Wine van Jimmy Rogers, nee, die hoort er eigenlijk niet in thuis, maar ach, ik vond dit nummer indertijd zo mooi, vandaar. En ook Apache van The Shadows had niks met la Bastille, maar toch, een tijdsdocument, ik kon het gewoon niet laten. Naar mijn mening zijn dit de enige zijstapjes die ik me gepermitteerd heb. Sommige La Bastille-muziek kon ik gewoon niet meer vinden. Maar wat allemaal wel! Wade In The Water van Ramsey Lewis, Ma Vie van Alain Barièrre, Boogaloo Down Broadway van Fantastic Johnny C, Walk Away Renée van The Four Tops, Woman van Peter and Gordon, J’Aime Les Filles van Jacques Dutronc., Walking With My Cat Named Dog van Norma Tanega… ik houd op, luister zelf en huiver, zo mooi! En je waant je weer in La Bastille. Het was machtig om dit te doen en het spijt me zo dat ik dit niet samen met Ton heb kunnen maken.
La Bastille kon weliswaar mede bestaan dankzij Ton’s dierbare vriendenclub, maar eerlijk is waar: Ton van Geene wás La Bastille. Deze playlist is niet alleen een intense herinnering aan La Bastille, maar ook en vooral aan goede vriend Ton. Ik wens je oeverloos veel luisterplezier...

Mijn moeder zei altijd: angst is de ernstigste ziekte die je kunt hebben. En ik heb wat angsten gekend in mijn jonge jaren. Veel mensen lijden aan deze ernstige ziekte.
En wat erger is, ze hebben geen notie hoe ze daar vanaf kunnen komen. Angst houdt je af van een heerlijk leven. Angst houdt je af van vrijheid. Angst houdt je af van je dromen. Reigers eten vissen, kikkers en salamanders. Maar soms verschalken ze konijntjes en jonge eenden, maar dat zie je niet zo vaak. Ik heb een grote vijver in mijn tuin waarin in het voorjaar vaak moeder eenden met een kudde jongen op bezoek komt. Begin mei 2014 werd ik dagelijks met zo'n bezoek vereerd.
Aanvankelijk waren er negen jongen. Op 3 mei waren het er nog acht. Op 5 mei 2014 zag ik 's morgens vroeg ineens een blauwe reiger aan de kant staan. met een jonge eend in zijn snavel! Zo'n klein eendje was het niet! In plaats van impulsief naar buiten te rennen heb ik mijn camera gepakt en die voor het raam een half uur laten lopen. Dit filmpje is een kort stukje eruit. Een van de mooiste vogels van ons land is toch wel de ijsvogel. En die hebben het niet makkelijk in deze ijzige februiarimaand. In tegenstelling tot wat de naam doet vermoeden hebben ijsvogels niks met ijs. Integendeel.
Als plassen, beekjes, stroompjes en wat dies meer zij zijn bevroren valt er niets te eten voor ze. En gaan er veel dood. Het ijsvogelbestand in Nederland is niet erg groot en schommelt nogal, onder invloed van de winters. Je mag vrezen dat er weinig over zullen zijn als deze vorstperiode voorbij is. Veel mensen hebben nog nooit een ijsvogel gezien. Ik verkeer in de bijzondere omstandigheid dat ik een forse tuin heb met een flinke waterplas, waarin salamanders en kikkers wonen. Geen vissen, het lievelingseten van ijsvogels. Maar ze nemen ook genoegen met salamanders weet ik. Want al jaar en dag zijn ijsvogels vaste bezoekers van mijn tuin. Wat een eer! Ik heb er in november 2011 via mijn slaapkamerraam een vast kunnen leggen. Op de foto bedoel ik. Dat mag wel een wonder heten, want ze zijn zeer schuw en razendsnel... Je moet wel goed kijken, het is maar een petieterig vogeltje. Maar mooi!

Rond de jaarwisseling 2010/2011 heb ik mijn dierbaren een mail gestuurd met daarin opgenomen een Youtube-filmpje over een flash-mob in een of andere eetgelegenheid. Wat ik toen nog niet wist is dat deze gebeurtenis zich afspeelde in de Seaway Mall in Welland, Canada. Dat ligt in de buurt van de Niagara watervallen.
Mijn broer woont daar 'om de hoek' en tijdens een van mijn bezoeken aan hem hebben wij een middagje in dat gigantische winkelcentrum doorgebracht. Op de plek waar door een koor heel verrassend en ontroerend een gedeelte van het Halleluja van Händel ten gehore werd gebracht, heb ik samen met mijn broer en zijn vrouw zitten eten. Ongetwijfeld heb ik daar een kingsize hamburger en een idem cola genuttigd, je wilt toch niet teveel uit de toon vallen in dat prachtige land. Met de wetenschap dat ik op de plaats ben geweest waar dit Youtube-filmpje is opgenomen, kijk en luister ik er ineens met heel andere ogen en oren naar: http://www.youtube.com/embed/SXh7JR9oKVE
Dit mag ik je zeker niet onthouden. Elk jaar in het vroege voorjaar arriveert er een waterhoentje in mijn tuin. Spannend, want ik vraag me dan telkens af of het een van de waterhoentjes is die de vorige zomer ook in mijn tuin heeft gehuisd.
Dit jaar was het direct raak: toen ik het beest riep kwam het in rappe draf op me af. Ongelooflijk, een half jaar niet gezien... Binnen de kortste keren arriveert er dan een aanstaande eega. Dit jaar produceerden ze drie nesten, het tweede werd door een of ander dierlijk vandaal voortijdig vernield en verorberd. Uiteindelijk zwom hier een vrolijke kudde in mijn vijver die mij heeft ontdekt als voedselleverancier. Tamme waterhoentjes, dat zie je niet vaak. Vrolijk sprongen ze op mijn schoot om het brood uit mijn vingers te grissen. Overigens zijn het net varkens: ze eten alles wat los en vast zit, druiven, kersen, bessen, mango’s, kaas, aardbeien, frambozen, banaan, sinaasappel, ze zijn er dol op, net als ik. Nu, eind oktober 2010 is er nog een enkeling over, de anderen hebben kennelijk een nieuw stekje gevonden. Ben benieuwd wie er zich in maart gaat melden.
Ik heb dit ding al een paar jaar in huis. Ooit gekocht in een speelgoedwinkel in Den Haag. Waanzinnig! Een tolletje dat in de lucht blijft hangen, je kan rustig even naar het toilet en bij terugkomst draait het nog.
Toen ik het voor het eerst zag, mijn mond viel open. Ik heb nu wat exemplaren in China gekocht en verras er soms iemand mee. Het heet officieel: Hi-Tech Permanent Magnetic Suspensible Flying Disk. Het is te koop voor nog geen 16 Amerikaanse dollars en wordt gratis naar Nederland getransporteerd. Als je hierop klikt, zit je precies goed. Nee ik heb geen commerciële belangen bij dit ding, het is alleen maar heel heel grappig.
Dit boek beschouw ik als mijn bijbel: De Andere Weg. Nog nooit heb ik een boek gelezen waarin zo helder uiteengezet is waar het in het leven werkelijk over gaat. Een boek over leven en liefde in al zijn facetten van de Amerikaanse psychiater M. Scott Peck.
Het is een Rainbow Pocket van uitgeverij Maarten Muntinga. Hieronder zie je een afbeelding. Het wordt overigens ook te koop aangeboden in een iets oudere uitgave met een oranjeachtige omslag met een foto van een rots in de zee. Het boek is helaas inmiddels uitverkocht en zal niet meer worden herdrukt, mailde het bedrijf mij. Ik kom het af en toe tegen op markplaats.nl. Kun je het ergens tweedehands kopen, aarzel dan niet, je zult er blij van worden.
Dit boek bevat een verzameling speeches en verhalen die ik jarenlang voor familie en vrienden heb geschreven en vaak ook heb uitgesproken bij gelegenheid van de meest uiteenlopende gebeurtenissen. Aan Mijn Geliefden (286 pag.) is een bont en vooral openhartig samenraapsel van inzichten en meningen, ernst en humor.
Het boek is uitgebracht in 2009 en was ruim een jaar lang via regionale boekhandels (Den Bosch e.o.) te koop (€ 22,50). Nu kan het alleen nog besteld worden via voelje@goedinjevel.nl
